Towing capacity is the maximum weight your vehicle can safely pull behind it-including the trailer and everything in it. It's a hard limit set by the manufacturer, based on engine power, frame strength, and braking.

**Key numbers to know:**
- **Towing capacity** = max weight of trailer plus cargo.
- **GVWR (Gross Vehicle Weight Rating)** = max total weight of vehicle plus passengers plus cargo. You can't exceed this, or you're overloaded.
- **Payload** = how much cargo you can put in the bed or cabin. Towing and payload share the vehicle's capacity.

**Before you tow:**
Never exceed your vehicle's rating. Check your owner's manual or the manufacturer's sticker inside the driver's door. You may need an upgraded hitch, brake controller, or wiring depending on trailer weight.
